REPAIR
Work began on the resto in September 1996. Yes that's me welding. The rotted sills were cut away revealing rotted inner sills, lovely. These were MIG (metal inert gas) welded up along with the floor. At the same time the inner arch was repaired. The o/s/r quarter was then repaired. Getting the new sill, rear corner, outer wheel arch and fuel filler panel to match up was a challenge. In the end the repair was invisible, although many hours were taken to achieve this result. A lower door skin was welded onto the n/s door and a good second hand door fitted to the o/s.
The inner wing top where it meets the outer wing was replaced and scuttle corners were made from scratch. Here you can see the fully welded body which was primed, polyurethane seam sealed and then given a stone proof coating before fitting the new wing. The screen was removed whilst fixing the scuttle.
The new wing was test fitted to be sure that everything was aligned before proceeding. Once satisfied, we stripped the wing back to bare metal. Etch and full priming were followed by applying Indiana red to the concealed places that could not be painted when fitted.
The doors, bonnet and new wings were refitted. Again concealed edges were painted first. The repairs were coated in high build primer and guide coated. Anti stone chip coating was applied to the lower edges of the car. We were now ready for paint.
That's my old Scirocco GT in the background.
