Mk1 Scirocco GLS
The Scirocco GLS was introduced to the UK VW range in the autumn of 1976 and replaced the TS. It retained the 85 bhp 1588c FR engine of its predecessor and would use it until the demise of the Mk1 in 1981. New interior trim and less garish colours distinguish the GLS from the TS. The GLS was a model unique to the United Kingdom.

The three spoke steering wheel now has slots rather than the holes of the TS wheel with a deeply recessed horn push. Transmission was 4-speed manual with an optional automatic box.

In 1978, the Scirocco range underwent a mild facelift which was available on the UK market in GLS guise from October costing £4231. The visual improvements included wraparound plastic covered bumpers, wraparound indicators and different styling to the side windows. Underneath the skin, new suspension and power unit mounts reduced engine and road noise. The '78 GLS retained the 'Tombstone' seats until 1979 when all new ones with removable head restraints and revised trim were introduced. For a time, the GLS was the only model of Scirocco on sale in the UK. That was until the LHD GTI which was a special order import.

1588cc FR carburetor engine, pictured in a 1981 Indiana red GLS, was used throughout the life of the model. The FR unit delivers 109mph and a 0-60 mph time of 11 seconds.
